Wiliam Darmawan – 2001560194 – Teknik Informatika(Global Class)

Hey everyone it’s me again, and now i’m going to explain about the event i’ve just participated in called DV Run.

SO what exactly is DV Run? It’s a 5k Charity Run held by Buddhist Students Organization at Bina Nusantara University at Taman Impian Ancol, Sunday, 4th December 2016. Why exactly do i participate in this event you ask? I joined this event in order to support DV Run’s Vision: To struggle for Indonesian Children’s right to have a better life. I think that by joining this event, i can at least show them i care about them and i hope i can fight for them even in a simple way, by running. What i get from this event is that we shouldn’t give up on something easily by using a shortcut or anything. In this run, we run approximately 5K and it’s truly exhausting. There are several occasion where we could just cut our way to save our energy, but we shouldn’t do that because it’s not right. For all the kids who lives in the street and the organization activist, i believe that you guys have something more to fight for right now. Don’t give up now. I believe you guys can do that. If i can do the 5K run without having a shortcut, you guys should be able to do better !

The Event’s Condition

Indonesian’s Street Children lives are important. Everyday, they only mump in the street. But they can do more than that. All they need is an education for them to support their knowledge so that they will know what to do with their lives and how to do that. I believe by educating them, we could change their life for a better purpose.

Charity Run

30th October 2016 was a remarkable day for me individually. Why? Because it’s the day i participated in an event called “Charity Run”, an event organized by Bina Nusantara University’s Statistic Organization, HIMATIKA UIA, and Bracelet of Hope at Alam Sutera Downtown. It’s a remarkable day for me because this event was held in order to directly support cancer sufferers supported by Bracelet of HOPE Community.

Before the event begin

I think we can already draw a conclusion about what kind of activity we did in this event. Yes, we run, and it’s for two laps for around 5 kilometers. It’s simple, but it’s worthy. I feel it’s necessary for us to take part in this kind of event because simply by joining it, we’re already supporting charity and it will help a lot of diseases sufferers. I hope that there will be more event like this because i’d like to participate in supporting diseases sufferers.

HTTP (HIMTI Togetherness and Top Performances)

So, the last thing i’m going to explain about in this blog is about the Binus University’s School of Computer Science biggest welcoming party event called HTTP (HIMTI Togetherness and Top Performances). First of all, i bet you’re all wondering what does HIMTI exactly stands for? Well, HIMTI stands for Himpunan Mahasiswa Teknik Informatika, which means Computer Science’s Community in English. If we’re to call it in highschool, it will be the student council. To join this event, it costs us 150 thousand rupiah, which was kind of worth it because we were given softwares, T-shirt, foods, transportation, and an Introduction to C Programming Language class. Well, let’s stop beating around the bush, i will now explain about my experience during this event!

HTTP-2016

Prior to the main event held on the 10th of September 2016 at Jakarta, BPPT II Building, we were given a class to introduce us to C Programming Language. For me personally, this class was truly helpful as it bestowed us with the fundamental of C Language, and then, comes the main event. The main event was held from 09.00 AM to 06.30 PM approximately. This event has been held since 2001 by the HIMTI and each year it has a different theme. 2015’s HTTP theme was SHINE, the abbreviation of “Strengthening Harmony & Inspiring New Experiences”. This year, it’s Passion, Innovation and Togetherness”. Before we enter the main hall to join the event, we were asked to fill in our student ID in order to prove that we attend the event. While we’re on the way to the main hall, there were many software made by Computer Science’s students being exhibited and we could try any kind of them if we wished to. Afterwards, we arrived on the main hall before 09.00 AM just to watch a movie “Zootopia” because 09.00 AM was the scheduled time of the event to began. When the clock hits 09.00 AM sharp, the event started. First of all, there were singing performances done by a band of Binusian 2020’s student called “Peanut Butter” and a Binusian 2017 student, our senior. Later on, we were given opening speeches by the President of HIMTI Kemanggisan’s branch, Jonathan Gozali, the President of HIMTI Alam Sutera’s branch, Rional Aureri Linggautama, the leader of HTTP’s event, and the chairman of Computer Science Department. After that, there were games where the MC would made some students came up to the stage to play, in which the winner would get a prize. We were given an hour break soon after. There were some stand established by the sponsors on the outside of the hall so we could buy some snacks and drinks to fill our stomach.

When the break’s over, we assembled again in the main hall to listen to a talk show. The guest was the student of Binus whom just made a innovative software. Then, we there were a drama performance or as the call it as a “Visualisation” where the casts didn’t talk during the drama, instead, the dialogue has already been recorded and they were just demonsrating the dialogue. It was actually a pretty well rehearsed drama, but its content was really dull and the cheesiness literally made me cringed. And after the visualisation finished, we were again given a recess and were asked to came back in an hour again. In that recess, we were prohibited to enter the hall as they were cleaning up the chair for the next event.

The next events were dance, band, and DJ performances. The dance was good as it was done by females, a some kind of mythical creature in the School of Computer Science, and the band were AWESOME because they could really bring us into the mood of singing and dancing with them. The DJ’s performance was actually not bad, but i’m not really a person to enjoy EDM and yeah, clubbing or something like that. After the DJ’s performances, we were allowed to go home and we could take our shirt souvenir.

In my honest opinion, this event was truly well-rehearsed and prepared, but it was lacking content. I was hoping it would be really fun and worth to be waited for, but it wasn’t. I feel like it was forced to be a really long event as it was held from 09.00 AM to 06.30 PM. To be honest, we spent much more time complaining to go home rather than enjoying the event . For an event that has been held for over a decade, it really disappointed me. But i hope in the future, we could change those things. I believe that as a Computer Science student we CAN improve the quality of this event. This will be a challenge to us. That’s why i hope i’ll be accepted as an activist of HIMTI in the future and i want to make a change to this event.

That’s all i can share about my experience about this event, hope you enjoy my review and honestly i did enjoy the event even if it’s just a bit, and i hope for a better future for all of HIMTI’s event.

Regards, HIMTI, One Family, One GOAL!

Academic Orientation

Academic Orientation was the next step of FEP that we had to get through before we attend our real University life. This event occured from the 5th of September 2016 to 15th September 2016, approximately 10 days.

What’s the difference between Academic Orientation and General Orientation you ask? Well, in General Orientation we were just attending some seminars and listening to something like regulations, academic life, and many more theories. But in Academic Orientation, it’s as if we’ve already attended University. We were taught some real lessons even though there were still some seminars. In Computer Science class, we were introduced to Algorithm and Programming language. This is the first chapter that we’ll get through later on in our class. This Academic Orientation itself was held in order to help freshmans to be accustomed to university because how lessons in university are given is totally different from high school’s. We were given exercises and in the last day, an exam. Yes you read it right, an EXAM. Fortunately, the score won’t be counted for our grades in University. It was done so that the freshmans won’t be shocked of how the real exam or lesson is. I personally think that this Orientation benefits us more than we could ever think. I’m really glad that i choose Binus University as the place to continue my study on.

Organizational Skills

Nowaday, it’s  kind of impossible not to be in an organization. Every group in our life can be considered a organization in spite of the size. For example, family is also a organization where we learn how to cooperate with our parents or siblings, yet, it’s not a big organization.

Now, what we need to have in an Organization is a skill. What kind of skill is that? Glad you asked. Soft skills are what we require to live in this globalization. Soft skills itself are a combination of interpersonal people skills, social skills, communication skills, character traits, attitudes, career attributes and emotional intelligence quotient (EQ) among others. In Binus University, this is the most essential skill for students to achieve because Binus realizes it’s role in this era.

Us the freshmans were always supplied by this soft skills material throughout the FEP. We were divided into classes, told to made a video, and even to came up with a cheer. Of course without communicating with others, it would’ve been impossible for us. It’s not just theory but we really did it and i feel that our soft skills has improved a bit, and that was only the General Orientation(GO) phase. After the GO, we will be doing whole lot of more organization activies since we have joined clubs and organizations. These clubs and organizations activities are not just words, it is real and we’ve already felt the impact before we even attend our University life. The example is the event i will explain later on in this blog, HTTP.

General Orientation

The first part of FEP was called General Orientation. Divided into 5 batches, it began from 18th July 2016 and ended at 27th August 2016 in which a batch occurs for a week. After FEP ended at 27th, there was a Conviction Ceremony to end the General Orientation and to inaugurate the freshman into a Binusian at 30th August 2016.

The batches were differed alphabetically. The first was called AAS, second BAS, third CAS, fourth DAS, and the last EAS.

I was put into the 4th batch, DAS and my class was DAS04 consisting of all Computer Science students and, yes, you’re right, the majority of the students were males. Our class consist of 48 students and apparently, only 6 students were female ……. 🙁

In General Orientation, there were group of seniors called Buddy Coordinators (BC). Freshman themselves were called Buddies. Buddy Coordinators were obliged to guide the buddies throughout the FEP. Us, the freshman were to come up with some cheers and a video promoting Binus University’s 35th Anniversary with the theme “For Greater Nusantara”.

Later on, this Buddy Coordinators were supposed to deliver some presentation to us freshman about the University’s regulation, courses, attendance, examinations card, Student Activity Transcript, anthem, autodebet system, websites and so on.

We were also given a lecture by our Vice Rector Student Affairs & Community Development, Drs. Andreas Chang, MBA about Binus University’s Way making Binus as it is right now.

Aside from that, we were also introduced to several Students Organizations ranging from learning to sports club. These organizations are the place for us to improve our soft skills in the future while studying at Binus University.

The fifth day, all of the classes were again divided into 6 classes according to beliefs.

The sixth day of the FEP we were required to perform our classes’s cheers in front of all buddies and Buddy Coordinators in a Gathering event. We had fun and soon after the gathering, there was an expo held by the Student Organizations in order to recruit the freshman into their Organization. We were supposed to choose any Organization that we wanted to join and there was no coercion.

The last day was the Conviction Ceremony. We were told to go to Jakarta Convention Center to attend our ceremony there. It was divided into 2 shifts. The first shift with majority of Kemanggisan’s Campus students and the second one with Alam Sutera’s Campus students, and i was in the second shift because i am an Alam Sutera Campus’s student. In the ceremony, we were given a speech by our Rector Prof. Dr. Ir. Harjanto Prabowo, MM to inaugurate us and there were several performances like dance, singing, magic, etc. And that ceremony was the closing of our General Orientation.

Briefly speaking, i had fun in the General Orientation. I met new friends from all ages (freshman to seniors)and I also joined several Organization in which i hope to improve my soft skills on.

We were DAS04 Classes of Computer Science, thanks for reading this article 😀
